In Estonia, rye bread has been on the table for about one thousand years. When times have been difficult during wars and famine, bread has been almost the one and only food product saving lots of lives. It is bread that is our main food product – everything else we call “food beside bread”. The Estonian Association of Bakeries unites Estonian bread manufacturers, big and small, old and new. The association has represented them already for twenty years. Our mission is to promote pad develop our rye bread culture. Since 1998, every second week of October the Bread Week is held, during which various events take place all over Estonia. On our Bread Weeks, we focus particularly on children. We tell children how bread was made in the old days and show them how rye bread is made today. In addition, Bread Days are held and we are also actively working on our School Bread project that started three years ago. The association plays an important role in developing vocational skills of bakers and confectioners, organizing contests for them and issuing professional certificates in accordance with European standards. We do our best to maintain our rye bread culture and traditions and help people consciously choose a healthy diet. We work hard to ensure continuous presence of healthy rye bread made of Estonian corn on our table day after day.
